The Ghost Album by Paul Moody – Album Premiere

The last time we checked in on Chicago’s Paul Moody we were premiering the single “Get Drunk or Get Married” this past winter. Well, it’s fall now and we’ve all probably done at least ONE of those things… time to check in. With Halloween just around the corner Paul has surprised us with a brand new 18-track concept album he calls The Ghost Album.

The spooky new collection is riddled with anthems about apparitions from start to finish. The haunting vibes aren’t just reserved to the lyrical content but extend to the minimal production on songs like “Isabella”, “Highway Song”, and honestly, the majority of the album. The gentle mbira (AKA finger piano) in the opening track creates a beautiful and eerie tapestry for Paul’s ghostly vocals to cascade across.

The macabre vibes shift a little once you hit the groovy track “California Ghosts”. With its West Coast guitar jangle and laid-back surf sound this one will give you a real pick me up. For an album with one central theme, it really shows off Paul’s diversity when it comes to composition. Whether it’s a solo acoustic number accented by horns and violins or an upbeat folk strummer, Paul Moody has a deep catalog of influences and he knows how to use it.

Paul himself spoke on the album by saying:

“This was a slow burning creative process with ghosts songs slowly piling up over the course of a year. A lot of these are home recordings, as I forced myself to take more control over the recording process and had to learn what the hell I was doing while making it. Fellow Chicago musicians Michael Downing of Signal-To-Noise and Luke Henry were a vital help to make this album a reality.”
