CHICD: Bunny, Deeper, and Clearance at The Hideout – 8/3

My goal is to see one show per week. Yes, I might be that annoying friend that just has to tell you about the thing you missed, but I’m also catching every great show in the city of Chicago–with plenty more ahead of me. Welcome to the Chicago Concert Dispatch.

At the time of this show, it is 31 weeks into the year and I have seen 74 shows.

Central to Bunny‘s sound are lead singer Jessica’s vocals. She’s able to craft an intimate, dreamy feeling with her ethereal whisper. Bunny is still ironing out their set. Although two songs had false starts, Jessica was still charming towards the audience and honest about their flubs. She even offered to buy the house a round… as long as everyone ordered water. The crowd this evening was great and supportive, and we were, in turn, rewarded with some great tunes. I especially liked “Promises.” I look forward to seeing how they evolve.

I listened to a number of Deeper‘s tunes before the show, but gained a new appreciation for their music after seeing it live. The lead vocals, in particular, had more clarity, and Nic delivered an aggressive performance. The drummer used a stripped-down kit and kept the beat light and punchy. I love how the jangly guitar cut through the rumble. The musicians’ attitudes were serious, driving their sound. The whole performance came together bouncy, yet, kind of angry.

It’s hard not to bob your head and feel your mood lift when you listen to Clearance play. They’re the perfect soundtrack for walking around the city, preferably on a sunny, blue sky kind of day. Performance-wise, their execution is spot-on. This show served as a record release for Clearance, so it’s no surprise that the crowd filled the space to its limit with positive, bouncy vibes. The band responded with enthusiasm, which was fun to watch. The drummer especially gave a very emotive performance.

Clearance played a great set filled with catchy tunes this evening; I zoned in on “Chances Are” during their set, which also happened to be the lead track of their new album, At Your Leisure.
