Milwaukee mainstays, Surgeons in Heat, are back with their first LP in 2 years, Bored Immortals. The undeniably danceable album is a unique blend of well-crafted indie rock, lyrical bummers, and polished pop production. The group is anchored by guitarist, songwriter and sole constant member, Johnathon Mayer (Jaill) who has a true knack for constructing a solid pop hook.
Big beefy bass lines provide the backbone to Bored Immortals and are accompanied by live and electronic drums which really set the table for a cornucopia of squiggly synths and guitars. Fans of Tame Impala will appreciate the production and “vibe” of this record but the list of musical inspirations found on Bored Immortals runs DEEP. Old-school R&B meets Beatles pop sensibilities with a fair amount of ’50s doo wop and’80s synth pop thrown in for good measure. It’s hard not to love.
