Chicago’s Impulsive Hearts have been making sun-soaked pop music with just a hint of Midwestern sadness since 2014. They’re back with a new single and a music video that sums up the inequality and hypocrisy of American life flawlessly.
“Alien” fits right in with the band’s undeniably catchy catalog. From the infectious keyboard melody to the airy vocal melodies, the song is bound to live in your head for days to come. While the band channel that sugary sweet West-coast garage sound on the surface, singer/songwriter Danielle Sines’ lyrics speak to the complexities of living in a society desperately searching for any sort of human connection.
The visuals are part tour diary, ode to trains, and a political collage that serves to elevate activists and protestors who have consistently stood up to tyrants and oppressors. It’s also a firm reminder to keep fighting and to never simply “accept” the way things are.
