If you’re in the Milwaukee area, tomorrow officially marks the start of Breadfest 2014. The festival, conceieved just last year by the Breadking band collective, has expanded significantly since its maiden voyage. Growing from two days to four, Breadfest now boasts 51 bands across ten stages. With its new size the festival has also expanded its reach, representing a wider range of genres that now includes everything from folk to hip-hop.

Single show ($6), single day ($10), and full weekend passes ($25) are available for purchase and thanks to Breadking, we’ve got a pair of weekend passes to give away! If you don’t win here, you can still pick up wristbands from Fuel Cafe, The Exclusive Company, and online through Mine All Mine Records.

Paper Holland | Bandcamp

In summer of 2008, two friends began writing music together. Four short years later, in January of 2013, the outfit released their debut album, Happy Belated. Their album is indie pop at its finest, through and through, accented by glowing guitar solos and a comfortable acoustic backing.

Fans of bands like Someone Still Love You Boris Yeltsin and Death Cab for Cutie will like this upbeat indie outfit’s sound. Rumor has it Paper Holland is planning on releasing new music in summer of 2014. Until then, enjoy Happy Belated below:

Softly, Dear | Bandcamp

Eau Claire’s Softly, Dear recently raised just over $2,000 via Indiegogo to help fund the release of their debut full-length and the album promises to explore some of the same folk-infused indie-pop we were introduced to with last years Portico EP. We’ve been enjoying the vibes of the album’s lead single, “Things I Say” since it’s release in May, and you can hear it for yourself below.

Playing Thursday, 7/31, at Linneman’s Riverwest Inn with WORK, Nick Stuart, Marielle Allschwang, Bum Illeum, Mike Fredrick and King Courteen. 9 PM – close, 21+.

Calliope | Bandcamp

Formed in 2010 MKE quartet Calliope plays a nostalgic blend of rock and roll, blues, and psychedelic tunes. Their recently released six-track opus, ORBIS, beautifully recreates some of best tones of the ’60s and ’70s while maintaining a sound that’s distinctly Calliope. Fans of The Doors and The Animals will have no trouble getting into ORBIS and the rest of the group’s catalog.

Caley Conway and the Lucy Cukes | Bandcamp

Caley Conway and the Lucy Cukes released Discipline Soup in March. In Discipline Soup, Caley’s soulful vocals weave in and out of twangy guitar playing. It’s country, it’s folk, it’s music that progresses at a pace appropriate for its genre and is sure to mellow out even the most aggressive bro.

Playing Saturday, 8/2, at Garden Park with The Fatty Acids, Migo, Twin Brother, Pushmi-Pullyu, Awkward Terrible, Antler House, Gauss and Marcy. Noon-5 PM, all-ages, free.

Lousy Trouts | Bandcamp

Lousy Trouts is the recently formed outfit led by Animals in Human Attire’s Jack Tell, with help from Jordan Maye and Alex Heaton. This project, driven by Jack, is a more folk-leaning, banjo-heavy version of his other bands, and just as good. The Guy Who Gave Everything Away But Sold His Boat was released late last March – with a good mix of song dynamics, textured instrumentation, and soul-searching lyricism, the debut album is sure to leave you wanting more.

Antler House | Bandcamp

Harmonic folk rock outfit, Antler House, has been floating around the area for a while now, but hasn’t been overly  until recently. Their debut album, Through the Dirt, was released on May 3rd of this year. Fans of Grizzly Bear, Local Natives, or any of the many Milwaukee-based folk rock bands (I haven’t heard a bad one yet) will enjoy Antler House, or, better yet, their set at Garden Park.

WebsterX | Bandcamp

Showing the genre-expansion of this year’s Breadfest, WebsterX, Sayth and more will be taking the stage at Mad Planet Sunday night to represent hip-hop. WebsterX released his experimental rap album Desperate Youth last November and premiered the music video for “Blue Dream (Trippy Trebby)” right here on MWA. There’s a lot to digest in Desperate Youth‘s sixteen tracks, but fans of indie-rap will find the process very rewarding.
