South Dakota Musicians Unite for Danny Yost Benefit Show – 6/9

South Dakota musicians are coming together for a benefit show on June 9th at the Icon Lounge to help raise money for South Dakota native Danny Yost’s stroke recovery.

Yost, a Beresford, SD native, grew up playing music in the Sioux Falls area but you may remember him as the long-time drummer of Chicago Indie band The Kickback.

Janitor Bob and the Armchair Cowboys, The Cartwright Brothers & The Split Pea Band, International Cover-Up, hollander, Doktor Barkey, and the Jono All Stars will perform at the Icon Event Hall & Lounge on June 9th. The show begins at 7 p.m. and is open to all ages. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance via Collective Efforts Union.

All money raised will go to Danny Yost, who suffered a stroke on April 29. Yost underwent two brain surgeries to repair the damage and is currently recovering and undergoing physical rehabilitation. Although he has health insurance, there will still be a substantial financial burden left from hospital bills and rehabilitation efforts not covered by insurance.

Yost’s brother Jesse helped organize the benefit show. He said he’s been overwhelmed by the kindness shown by people across the globe as Danny recovers.

“When I first started to organize this show, the outpouring of support was amazing. Even though the plan wasn’t public, friends were immediately offering to help,” said Jesse Yost. “We are so honored by the support and excited to bring some legendary Sioux Falls music to the stage in June.”

Both acclaimed Pomp Room performers Janitor Bob and the Armchair Cowboys and Sioux Falls melodic punk rockers hollander are reuniting specifically for this show. Other acts include comedy musical veterans The Cartwright Brothers & The Split Pea Band, local pop punkers International Cover-Up and experimental rockers Doktor Barkey. All acts are or were based in Sioux Falls.

Austin Kaus, vocalist for hollander, considers Danny Yost one of his best friends and is honored to reunite his group—who played their last show in 2011—for the event.

“Danny is one of the best drummers and human beings I know,” Kaus said. “The circumstances were terrifying, but I can think of no better way to help Danny out than by plugging in the amps and blasting some tunes for a great guy.”

At age 16, Danny was a member of The Glory Holes, a popular Sioux Falls disco cover band whose roster also included Yost’s brothers Chris, Jesse and Andy. He was an active member of Kory and the Fireflies for years. He also formed and played in Burly and Sleepeater before joining The Kickback, a group started by his younger brother, Billy. While playing with The Kickback in Chicago, he also played in Oh My God. In 2015, Yost relocated to Los Angeles, where he has performed with Bibi Bourelly, Troi Irons, Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas (a gig that featured a performance on Last Call with Carson Daly), Party Nails, Krewella, The Claudettes, and The Reigning Monarchs. His sought-after drumming abilities have led him to play shows across the globe, including Brazil and Saudi Arabia.

In addition to the benefit concert, a future event featuring silent auction items from businesses and bands is being organized. Those interested in contributing financially can do so via the family’s GoFundMe.

The schedule for the benefit event is as follows:

The Cartwright Brothers & The Split Pea Band: 7 – 8:10 p.m.

The Jono All Stars: 8:30 – 9:10 p.m.

Janitor Bob and the Armchair Cowboys: 9:30 – 10:30 p.m.

International Cover-Up: 11:30 p.m. – 12:15 a.m.
