Central Indiana’s loudest, grooviest, and crunchiest garage rock band is back with a six-track EP that’ll really get you moving. Brother O’ Brother‘s latest release lives up to it’s name.
Monster Truck jumps right into the deep end with the heavy geopolitical blues jam “Unleavened”. Singer/guitarist Chris Banta channels the soulful delivery of Jack White mixed with a gospel preacher on this infectious and poignant opener.
The title track is another ripper that feels as about as huge as an actual Monster Truck by the end of it. “GOLD” could be an MC5 B-side with some serious Detroit rock city vibes and the heavy riffing we’ve come to love from B.O’.B.
The real standout on Monster Truck is the B-side opener “Howlelujah”. The band hits their stride on this one and puts everything they’ve got into the climatic end of this one. A heart stopping drum fill from Warner Swopes kicks off the closing ramp up of the song and damn does it hit hard.
“Must Be Blind” brings the energy down a touch and finds the band doing the slow driving blues rock they do oh so well. The closer “Omni” is a fuzzed out groove that once again showcases the musical chemistry that flows through this Midwestern duo.
The all-work-and-some-play ethics of Chris Banta and Warner Swopes have taken Brother O’ Brother from a garage band into a fully functioning, touring machine. Playing over 200 shows in the last 2 years and selling thousands of records, there are no signs of slowing down. In their downtime, the duo run the indie label Romanus Records, which not only releases their own albums but some of the best indie rock from the Indianapolis area and beyond.
Monster Truck truly captures the energy of Brother O’ Brother’s “anything-goes” live shows and is a ripper of an album. For fans of The Black Keys, White Stripes, MC5, T. Rex, and anything with some serious soul and gnarly riffs.
