So, this is embarrassing, but you caught me whole-heartedly, unabashedly, undeniably falling in love with Emily Blue‘s latest video, “Falling in Love.”
While feminist messaging is already prevalent in Emily Blue’s music, “Falling in Love” was a chance to cut loose. The video is dripping in color, confetti, and bubbles, and it’s truly a showcase of Emily Blue’s personality in the most perfect way. Her aesthetic just kills—think St. Vincent but without the cold facade—and I’m in love with every minute of it. Watch “Falling In Love” below:
“Falling In Love” is the first music video shot on the Nikon Z7. It was produced by Max Perenchio and directed by Nikon Ambassador Chris Hershman (formerly of Tall Walker) in Chicago, IL. We had a chance to talk with Emily about the awesome opportunity of filming a video with Nikon, and about her recently released album *69.
On “Falling in Love”:
It is about having crushes on tons of different people with tons of different identities, all kinds of gender and personality. It’s kind of a bisexual anthem about everything you can fall in love with about a person. There are so many different kinds of people in the world, and we just wanted to say, ‘Hey you, I think you’re cute, I kinda have a crush on you!’
On her new album:
The new music has a lot of caricature to it. A lot of valley girl vernacular or surreal elements which I think the wig compliments. Because there is that line between reality and parity that I like to ride with this project.
On being blonde:
Having the dumb blonde character on my record is a statement about how people will see me, either as a woman, or as woman artist, and not really take me seriously. So I kind of embraced that, so in that way it is kind of like a taste of their own medicine. It’s like, ‘OK so here ya go, here is that character a lot of time you assume women are.’ Its a fun way to poke fun at that.
On her messaging:
This project is a way to find joy, humor, and just kind of, like, fun in music. Going from a record about surviving sexual abuse to this completely fantastic pop music, I want people to know that I’m still a person that cares deeply about those subjects, but that I’m finding a way to make my image and my brand and my music feel strong, and not a victim of something, but rather a survivor of something.
On the lack of backup singers in the video:
It has taken me till now to realize that it can be empowering and kind of liberating, at the same time as it can be scary. It’s just me now.
