Give It a Spin: “This Is Halloween”

It’s not Halloween yet, but it soon will be! Our pumpkins are screaming in the dead of night carved, our halls are decked with holly cobwebs, and we just need to find the perfect holiday soundtrack to top it all off. Enter the season classic, “This Is Halloween”.

“This Is Halloween” starts with a mysterious, steady string intro before a haunting chorus joins in a steady march. The narrative of the song takes us through myriad Halloween archetypes and matches the tone of each verse to its subject.

I am the one hiding under your stairs,
Fingers like snakes and spiders in my hair

The muted, almost delicate, singing of children leads to the climactic entrance of a ghoulish chorus, cymbal crashes, and a crescendo of instrumentation. It’s a really beautifully orchestrated song, one that swirls around you like fog in a cemetery.

Don’t we love it now?

Some of the lyricism in “This Is Halloween” is particularly poignant. There’s a fairly simple rhyme scheme throughout, but upholding that and still writing lyrics that hold some weight is certainly a feat.

This is Halloween, this is Halloween,
Halloween, Halloween, Halloween, Halloween

Inspired.

If you’re not slamming that play button, what are you doing? Enjoy one of the finest treats of the season while you can.
