For over three years now Chicago’s Rust Ring have been making ’90s tinged emo punk that taps right into the human condition of your average Midwesterner. The latest single from their upcoming album Genuine Me is a cathartic and personal 4 minutes and 20 seconds about having to choose between physical and mental health on a day-to-day basis.
Listen to the MWA premiere of “Physical / Mental” below and don’t forget to give yourself a mental health day.
Musically, the song offers all of the sludgy guitar and washy cymbal hits you could ever want. Lyrically, singer/guitarist Joram Zbichorski speaks directly to his battles with trigger finger, simply wishing to play “pain free barre chords” again, among other things. The song lulls you in with its brooding intro and verse that soon drifts away into melodic arpeggiated guitar and eventually closes with a cacophony of drums, guitar, and bass. The ups and downs in “Physical / Mental” mirror the real-life struggle of keeping your body and mind from breaking down. The track is not only a cathartic reminder to take care of yourself but a damn catchy one at that.
Rust Ring’s full-length album Genuine Me is out on Friday, July 12th via Worry Records. Pre-Order it today and be sure to catch the band at the official release show on Saturday, July 13th at Subterranean, RSVP and grab your tickets via Facebook.
