Ever since the release of her MWA debut Bathing Peach, we’ve been devouring any new material from V.V. Lightbody—the solo project of Vivian McConnell, one of Chicago’s most seasoned songwriters and multi-instrumentalists. After releasing two shimmering singles: “Baby, Honestly” and “Car Alarm”—earlier in the summer, V.V. Lightbody is back to cool things down with “Allowance,” premiering today courtesy of Acrophase Records.
You may remember the tune from last summer’s MWA Live Session, where V.V. performed the song to an intimate crowd and just a few cameras rolling. The studio version is beautifully stripped down—featuring harmonizing flutes, vibraphone, and Vivian’s signature serene vocal.
Listen below:
V.V. spoke on the song by saying:
Overcoming guilt has been a big focus of mine for a few years now. I am the youngest child, a woman, and incredibly midwestern, so it’s often easier said than done. “Allowance” explores the results of breaking through guilt in a relationship and facing realities, however hard they may be. – V.V. Lightbody
In between tours, she is in the process of finishing her next album that is set to be released in the Spring. If, like us, you’re anxiously awaiting the new album, don’t miss V.V. Lightbody performing at Lincoln Hall on Saturday, November 30th with Tasha and Bunny. Get your tickets here.
