Milwaukee’s Large Print are a fairly new quintet but we’re quickly falling for them hard. Their first release Strength VIII came out last fall and is a laid-back indie rock EP full of melodic guitars, pop vocals, and just enough weirdness to keep you guessing.
The band is back with a full-length album out on Saturday, May 18th via Minneapolis-based Heavy Meadow Records. End Scenery picks up right where Large Print’s first EP left off—nurturing some of the seeds they planted in their earlier work and satiating our need for more of the band’s alternative pop stylings.
On the album’s first single “Suzy” the five-piece have dialed in a perfect mix of polished vocal harmonies and lo-fi bedroom rock that makes the song an undeniable joy to listen to. It’s hard to pick a favorite cut on this 7-track album but “Suzy” is certainly a front runner.
Large Print is not all catchy pop melodies, songs like “Thread” & “Dirt Cheap” touch on a darker vibe that calls to mind the guitar interplay and vocal delivery of Sonic Youth’s later work. Fans of clean, intricate guitars and matter-of-fact vocals will appreciate this one. Imagine Pavement with a lot less distortion and a bit more existential dread.
