CHICD: Uncle Sexy and The Nephews with Mouton at Cole’s Bar – 7/26

My goal is to see one show per week. Yes, I might be that annoying friend that just has to tell you about the thing you missed, but I’m also catching every great show in the city of Chicago–with plenty more ahead of me. Welcome to the Chicago Concert Dispatch.

At the time of this show, it is 30 weeks into the year and I have seen 133 shows.

Mouton of Fayetteville, Arkansas was a tight three-piece that explored indie rock very much fueled by classic rock sounds. The drummer, Daniel Ordnoff, was enthusiastically aggressive, while Cole Simmons on bass added a happy bounce. Vocalist Pete Mouton approached the mic with a wide stance and a curl in his lip that could snarl or smile. They killed both their single and B-side, but sometimes it’s the moment when a band breaks form that sticks in your head.

“You guys like super fast and sexy rock ‘n’ roll? In that case, we’re going to play you a country song.”

They then launched into “Play Me a Song I Can Cry To,” but quickly returned to form and closed out with another rocker, their song, “Benny.”

Uncle Sexy and the Nephews completely filled the stage at Cole’s. Working tonight as Uncle Sexy’s backing band was Chicago scene rockers Rookie, aka The Nephews. They had a relaxed joy playing together. Friends jamming and sharing in their rock n roll fueled lives. We also had members of Gal Gun in the house. John O’Brien got on stage for an extended jam on “Down by the River.” Max and John trading off solos with ridiculous smiles on their faces.

So, the burning question I’m sure you all want to know: Is Uncle Sexy sexy? Hell yeah.

He oozed confidence as he strutted and wailed with full aggressive force. He wasn’t afraid to be a bit silly, either. You don’t wear a coonskin cap if you aren’t open to making people laugh. The biggest hit of the night was their little ditty, “Budweiser.” I loved the part when Uncle Sexy and Max motorboat-sang, “Brrrrr, ice cold.” Simply brilliant.

Bottom line: Uncle Sexy and the Nephews wanted the audience to forget their worries and get stoned on rock ‘n’ roll with them. As Uncle Sexy said, “If looking at pictures of feet gets you stoned, then get stoned.” We all deserve a break, and these guys will definitely make you forget your troubles.
