In case you didn’t hear it during your usual hunt for psychedelic news, Austin Psych Fest has made their first round of lineup announcements for this year’s fest, and it’s bound to make all you reverb junkies smile.
If you’re a fan of this (semi) weekly feature then I’m sure you know a bit about APF. For those unfamiliar with what this amazing music fest brings check out some photos from last year to get an idea of what you’re in for.
Leading up to its 7th year, the folks at the Reverb Appreciation Society are showing no signs of slowing down. Bands from all around the world, new and old, will grace the beautiful outdoor stages of Carson Creek Ranch this May.
Here’s what you can expect (so far).
Spanning 5 decades and 6 continents, the lineup is shaping up to be their best yet in my opinion.
A major organizer for the fest, The Black Angels guitarist Christian Bland, brings in friends and extended musical family from all around the world to showcase the ever expanding genre we call “Psychedelic”.
Returning to the fest are acts like Black Lips, The Golden Dawn, Acid Mother’s Temple, and of course The Black Angels. Some new and exciting additions include Primal Scream, of Montreal, Liars, The Horrors, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and many, many more.
Midwest Action ran into Joel Gion from the Brian Jonestown Massacre enjoying last year’s fest but we’re extremely excited to see his new band, Joel Gion & The Primary Colors, making their way to APF stages. Here’s a taste of what Joel has been up to.

Innovators of psychedelic pop and brilliant harmonies, The Zombies, make their first appearance at the fest. Their 1968 album Odyssey and Oracle, is one of the best things to happen to pop music ever, spawning hits like “Time of the Season” and “She’s Not There”. Over 40 years later the band is sounding just as good. I hope to hear this one live come May.
Perhaps a lesser known figure on the lineup, Japan’s MONO is a band that deserves to be heard all around the world. As a longtime fan, I couldn’t be more excited to see this gorgeous instrumental band come to the states again.
I could ramble on with excitement over this half complete lineup but I’ll save that for the next round. Expect the second round of announcements sometime in January or February of 2014.
