Two 2018 Releases You Might Have Missed

Though 2018 has come to a close, there are plenty of releases that may have been missed. The amount of music released week-to-week can be overwhelming. Here are two releases that are worth your time:

Fog b/w Nine Inch Cakes by FCKR JR

In a five minute burst, FCKR JR introduces their sonic template. “Fog” opens up with a wall of sonic fuzz. Lead singer Ben Grigg invites the listener in with his mellow vocal delivery. Certain vocal phrasings worm their way into your brain. As the song builds to a sudden end, there is no option but to play the song on repeat.

“Nine Inch Cakes” shows a more measured approach. The song seems to meander. Grigg is listing off cooking ingredients as the instruments move at a slow gait. Then, in the last minute and a half, there is a layer of fuzz that plays against the vocals in a pleasing end to FCKR JR’s first release.

EP NO. 1 2018 by Time Thieves

This debut EP is simply no frill power pop. There is a considerable amount of harmonizing to create strong hooks that underpin many songs. The vocals have a pleasing delivery, and the rhythm guitar has a chunky tone that I instantly recognize as power pop.

Time Thieves feels entirely intuitive. Either you are in sync with the musical presentation or you aren’t. But, for those who are searching for some kind of warmth in the apartments that we spend so much of our winters, I bestow this EP to you.
