With the ridiculous amount of high profile festivals that pop up every Summer/Fall in Chicago it’s easy to forget that one the best comes every January.
Now in its fifth year, Chicago Psych Fest has been bringing together some of the best local psychedelic, experimental, and “out-there” music the city has to offer. This year the fest has expanded from two days to three, making it the biggest one yet.
For those that follow the Chicago psych scene (or this weekly feature) there will be plenty of familiar names among this year’s lineup. You might recall our review of the jazz-psych masterpiece Catalytic Conversion by Crown Larks, who will get the festival started this year, along with experimental psych-folk band The Humminbird.
Other notable acts include Verma, Outer Minds, and Variety Lights just to name a few. The fantastic funk-psych stylings of Velcro Lewis Group are not to be missed either. Their latest album Open The Sky came out last October and is filled with deep-cuts that will get you moving.
Music aside, a festival would not be complete without beer. Chicago favorite, Goose Island, answered the call and will be serving a special “psych brew” beer in honor of the event. Adding to the psychedelic sounds and brews will be some trippy light shows courtesy of brownshoesonly and a slew of DJ sets in between acts.
