We’ve tossed the phrase, “experimental pop” around the Midwest Action meetings a few times in regards to some of the bands we listen to. If you’re looking for a perfect example of experimental pop, let me direct you to Thin Hymns. With mentally aromatic sounds and dreamy vocals, this band that just puts you in a good mood, no matter what is happening around you.
With their new album Black Water, Thin Hymns brings their dreamy synth style out in full force. Strumming guitar with driving bass mixes with higher-pitched vocals to create a style that makes you want to sway no matter where you are . As a matter of fact, I’m swaying at my desk as I type this. Check out the awesome video series that goes along with Black Water on Vimeo:
While their earlier EP, Logic & Theory, had some faster and more straight-forward pop tracks, there was a hint of experimental dreaminess involved. With this new release, it is apparent that Thin Hymns are looking to send you off to dreamland. “Lady Mountain” is a perfect example, and also my favorite track from the album.
If you’re digging their sound, and have a better understanding of what experimental pop music is than yours truly, then I encourage you to brave the cold and head out to The Empty Bottle tomorrow. They will be opening for Mississippi’s very awesome Dent May. This is going to be a great show, so be sure to grab some tickets early.
