On Thursday May 29th two of Chicago’s best local acts, The Damn Choir and The Hemmingbirds, are coming together to help host a benefit for New Leash On Life. If awesome music and a damn good time isn’t enough to bring you out for this great cause then fear not. There will also be the annual silent auction that takes place during this event. Prizes to be won include pairs of 3-day passes to Lollapalooza, Riot Fest, and Pitchfork Music Festival as well as so much more. It’s all for a great cause and it promises to be one hell of a show.
The Damn Choir
The Damn Choir came together in 2009 by the skilled hand of lead singer/guitar Gordon Robertson. Wanting to create music he felt was true and from the heart, Gordon and his crew released Creatures of Habit this year. With an element of the same music that can make an audience fall in love with their style (tracks like “Noah” are often on repeat in my car), this album brings new messages and great rock riffs amongst the veil of a deeper meaning. Gordon has been quoted saying, “I disliked the music in our church because it seemed insincere. I wanted to write a proper hymn about what really goes on.” Well they have certainly nailed it with Creatures of Habit. The Damn Choir are also not new comers to helping out NLOL. They show their support by donating $5 of every shirt they sell to the organization.
Here is their latest video for “Creatures”:

The Hemmingbirds
The Hemmingbirds are a Midwest Action highly recommended band. Having played all over the Midwest and in a variety of venues from large to small, they have been ranked as “a band to watch” in more than one publication. With their albums Death Wave and the newest The Vines of Ages, the impressive nature of this band only continues to grow. Now they have been away from the public eye for a little while working on their new album but they are coming out as a full band this Thursday for a great cause and breaking their 6 month silent streak (and we couldn’t be more happy about it). But to tide us all over for a bit they released their video for “My Love, Our Time Is Now” and even after 7 months of it being posted it continues to make some major waves.

A New Leash On Life has been in operation since 2005 and has helped to save over 580 dogs. They truly believe that no breed is too strange, no size is too difficult, and no age is too old or young. They want to help these pups find homes, be taken care of, and get them out of a system that wrote them off long ago. Often focusing on the “non-adoptable” dogs, they argue that if you take a little extra time you will find these animals just need a chance to show you how great they are. They save the dogs people think are past saving and with some TLC (not the band…) they get these dogs good as new. This program does a lot of good but it doesn’t run for free.
So how can you help keep this place kicking? Come on out to The Beat Kitchen this Thursday to help fund this awesome organization. We are some major animal lovers here at Midwest Action so this gets a 100% stamp of approval from us. There will be the Silent Auction with over 50 prizes to be won and some of them are some majorly awesome gifts. Check the even out and the list of prizes right HERE. Tickets are going to run you $15 in advance and $20 at the door (all for the good cause). You can grab those HERE!
If you can’t make it tonight check out New Leash On Life on their website were you can make a donation to them any time you want or take the big leap and adopt one of these awesome dogs today!
