By this time, your 2014 introductory hangovers have most likely subsided, leaving you thirsty for a.) musical fulfillment and b.) more booze. A little hair of the dog never hurt anyone! In the case you’re looking for either of those, or maybe you’re just looking for a good time after a hectic holiday, the live music hosted by Cole’s Bar on Milwaukee is sure to fill that void.
Soul Low will be making the trip from Wisconsin to bring their indie rock stylings to enthusiast Chicago concert-goers. Long, long ago in July, this fledgling trio released an album that got multiple glowing reviews, one of them being from yours truly. Check out a song or two and you’ll quickly understand why. Soul Low’s sound is a combination of a few great things – jazzy horns, funky bass lines, and folky compositions – all wrapped up into an album with multi-colored teeth on it.
Performing with Soul Low is Chicago-based outfit, The Welcome. These catchy, pop musicians will serve as an awesome compliment to Soul Low’s set. In February of 2013, the group released Bicentennial, a 5 song EP, and are working towards a full-length album. Sarah Johnson’s vocals are soulful and once coupled with male vocals, create a totally infectious sound. Once described as “one of the more lovable bands in the city”, Cole’s Bar will provide you the opportunity to get up-close-and-personal and find out for yourself.
Varsity will round out the evening with their eclectic garage rock. Like The Welcome, Varsity includes both male and female vocals, and unlike the welcome. Turns Out b/w Downtown was released as a limited edition cassingle by Joyful Noise last December, and you know as well as I do that Joyful Noise has excellent taste in the artists they work with. This evening, enjoy Varsity’s jangly guitars and exploratory style as it is meant to be enjoyed: with a beer in hand and among friends.
Cole’s Bar put together an awesome bill that’s likely to rival this year’s most impressive New Year’s Eve parties. Yes, that might be a bit hyperbolic, but the only way to see is to come check it out for yourselves.
This show kicks off around 10PM at Cole’s Bar (2338 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago). Admission at the door is FREE. Your eyes do not deceive you; music this evening is free to those 21+. RSVP on Facebook here and enjoy some quality music at a great price.
