Beat Kitchen, a staple among Chicago venues, will be hosting U.S. Royalty as they tour in advance of a new album. Sharing the bill with U.S. Royalty are two Chicago acts, Hemmingbirds and The Van Goghs.
Kicking off the evening off are Chicago ’60s-’70s inspired experimental band, The Van Goghs. This quintet will be an awesome introduction to the evening; sweet guitar licks and synth are sure to energize. Their EP, Roman Candle, dropped in early May of this year, and it is available to preview below:
Playing next are Hemmingbirds. Hemmingbirds struck a chord with me (literally) from my very first listen. Once I heard “Mellow Gold Haze”, I knew this band would be in my collection for a while. Their flavor of indie rock is dreamy and fiercely passionate, driven by front-man Yoo Soo Kim’s vocals and backed by a powerful band.
These guys have been working hard lately, with a Vocolo interview, Taste of Chicago performance, and Daytrotter session recently under their belts. I find myself wondering if they can do any more, and then they pop up on yet another bill.
Washington D.C.’s U.S. Royalty will close the evening out. USR is known for the volatility and explosiveness that they bring to their live performances, believing that energy and emotion shouldn’t stay trapped inside of the studio or CD. Their 2011 debut, MIRRORS, lead to appearances at SXSW, NXNW, Art Basel, and to print publication features. A new album, Blue Sunshine, is anticipated in Fall of 2013, and USR has been debuting songs at select shows.
Check out the amazingly enchanting title track below. Beginning with delicate, eerie mandolin, the song kicks into action with deep chants and intensifies at the chorus with a valient, orchestral sound. “Blue Sunshine” is strong and vast; I can only imagine what experiencing it live might feel like. If you miss this at the Beat Kitchen, U.S. Royalty is heading to The Drinkery in Cincinatti on 9/20 for another performance.
Adding Hemmingbirds and U.S. Royalty to the same bill just makes sense; they compliment each other so well. All in all, it’s a wonderful package and should make for a solid show. Tickets are available for $10. Show starts at 8pm and is 17+.
