When you’ve been away from Midwest Action as long as I have, you need to come back with a bang. So it was no contest when I heard that Grieves was headed to The Subterranean on May 23rd that this was going to be my welcome back article. Grieves is a perfect example of a hip hop star who comes from the Midwest but continues to bring his music all over the globe. Since 2007 he’s been making major splashes in the music world and is currently on tour promoting his new album Winter & the Wolves with long time production partner Budo.
Grieves has been making amazing music for some time now. In 2008 88 Keys and Counting debuted and showed the world what Budo and Grieves could do. Fast forward to 2014 with the debut of Winter & the Wolves where Grieves continues to implement an amazing balance of flowing rap mixed with lyrical singing. His style is one that is hard to compare since it is so unique. It’s this attribute I feel that is what separates him from the rest of the over saturated rap styles these days. With more to say than what “bling” he’s acquired, Grieves offers his listeners an engaging and thought provoking style of music.
With two singles out right now it was tough to decide which to post. The lyrical and moving “Serpents” or the hard pressing and head bouncing “Shreds”… I love the newest of the two but had to go with his debut single “Shreds” as it sets the perfect tone of what this latest album is about.
Grieves has been on tour since April when he jumped the sea to rock Europe but now he’s back home in the good ole’ U.S.A. and he’s coming to a Midwestern town near you. You will not want to miss the opportunity to see this home town hero perform and especially in a venue as unique as SubT (with split level viewing but still being pretty close to the stage). The show is kicking off at 8:00pm with Fearce Vill and SonReal. Tickets are going to run you $14 day of the show but if you want to save $2 you can pre-order them right HERE.
If you can’t come out to this show you’ll have a few last chances to catch Grieves as he makes his way West across the country before hitting the land where it all began in Seattle:

5/27 – Omaha, NE – The Waiting Room
5/28 – Rapid City, SD – Sports Rock
