Three days. Two “Dunn”s. One fest. Chicago’s very own, often imitated, never duplicated Dunn Dunn Fest is returning to the Windy City from February 20th to the 22nd.
The Subterranean | 8:30PM | 17+
This is it. The cherry on top of this three-day festival of Americana. If there’s one day of Dunn Dunn Fest not to miss, this would be the one. Saturday’s festivities should prove to be an amazing time.
Starting the evening out at Sub-T are Urbana’s Santah, an indie rock group that has made big waves in the Chicago music scene ever since the release of their 2010 debut White Noise Bed. They’ve since spent their time touring the US & Canada, making a name for themselves at industry showcases such as CMJ.
Their style is fun and folky with a bit of a rock edge. Vocalists Stan and Vivian McConnell add bittersweet lyrics about love and loss to the mix and make the band something special. Check out their Big Yellow Couch performance of “Teeth” from their 2012 album You’re Still A Lover below.
Continuing the evening is Daniel Ellsworth and The Great Lakes, a folky blues rock act that has already made plenty of “Artist to Watch” lists this year. Lucky for us this high praise is well deserved. Don’t let the name fool you, these guys hail from Nashville and not the great lakes area but they’re making their way all around the Midwest this spring.
Their 2011 debut album Civilized Man was released to rave reviews and quickly became one of the top albums of the year on Amazon. Their follow up LP, Kid Tiger, is due out March 4th and has engineer Vance Powell (Jack White, The White Stripes, The Raconteurs) behind the mixing board. Check out Bleeding Tongue below from their debut and don’t miss them at Dunn Dunn Fest.
Capping off the night, and the festival as a whole, is another Nashville based act; The ever-popular Moon Taxi will close out the night at Sub-T. Fresh off a couple of brilliant performances on Conan and The Late Show with David Letterman, the band has a lot of buzz around them as they head into their spring tour.
Their style is hard to peg down into one genre, but what’s apparent is that these guys know how to make good rock n’ roll with catchy guitar leads and memorable lyrics. With a couple of full length LP’s and a slew of live recordings under their belt, Moon Taxi is not to be missed. Catch these guys before they blow up even more than already have!
So that’s it, it’s not Lollapalooza or Pitchfork but something even more special than the two of those big name festivals combined. Dunn Dunn Fest has once again delivered an amazing sampling of bands that surely offers something for everyone.
Tickets are still available for Thursday, Friday and Saturday’s festivities (A 3-Day pass will only run you $30!). Simply follow the links below for more info.
