Formed in 2011 by songwriter/director Antony Ablan, Chicago’s Antony & the Tramps have coined their genre “American Gypsy”. The group explains the term as “…wooden-electric. It wanders but isn’t lost, because its a tramp, a gypsy. You can’t get lost when you’re in love with where you are.” If that poetic description doesn’t help you put your finger on the genre, the group takes its cues from genres like roots music and indie rock.
Antony & the Tramps debut, a s/t LP, was released last July as a “name your price” digital download or a 6-panel physical CD available for $10. The album’s 12 tracks were recorded in Chicago over six months using portable recording equipment. Check out the music video for the roots rock epic “Elephant Painting” below, which clocks in at just over 8 minutes.
Antony & the Tramps will be at the Hideout, tomorrow night playing a benefit show in order to raise money and awareness for the Chicago chapter of NAMI – the National Alliance on Mental Illness. You can learn more about the organization on their website, and find all of the details about the show below.
The show kicks off at 8:00 PM tomorrow night, 10/5, at the Hideout – 1354 W Wabansia Ave. Special guest openers on the bill include Midnite on Pearl Beach, The Bribes, and Baby Money. General admission tickets are $15, and can be picked up through Ticketfly in advance of the show.
If you’re feeling particularly charitable, there are more extravagant ticket packages are available. $50 gets you into the show + a signed merch package from each band. For $100, you’ll get an all access pass complete with the signed merch and a private backstage performance from Antony & the Tramps. For information on these ticket packages, shoot an e-mail to info@andthetramps.com.
