Turn the lights down low, just a bit more, yea right about there. Now that you’ve got the mood set, settle into a nice comfy chair and switch on this new groove from Love In The Dark.
The Chicago funk/R&B outfit are back with a new single that sounds like it came out of another decade. Don’t let the name fool you, “Soulless” is oozing with soul. You may have caught frontman Mitch McLaughlin playing around town as a solo acoustic act but this full band is a completely different monster.
The bass line brings you into the track, minimally at first, and then it builds to a nice Motown thump. Enter drums, guitar, and Mitch’s smooth vocal delivery and you’ve got the makings of a slow jam. Sax, trombone, and keys carry the tune into a gorgeous chorus and back down into the minimalist groove. The slap-back reverb on the guitar solo, the slow build up, the police sirens that close out the track, it all comes together quite nicely and nothing seems out of place.
