The most important fest of the day is back, What’s For Brek-Fest 2 is coming to Chop Shop this Sunday, June 16th! The full day of music features some of our favorite local acts including MWA artists such as Ovef Ow, Bev Rage and The Drinks, and Montrose Man, as well as 4 out-of-towners from the What’s For Breakfast? Records to round it all out. It also lands on Father’s Day this year so bring your dads or just any random stranger that seems like they’d be a good “father figure”.
The schedule for the day has remained a secret, encouraging all you concert-goers to wrap up your brunch plans early and head to the fest so you won’t miss a single act on this stacked lineup. Here are just a few of the bands we’re excited to catch this Sunday:
Ovef Ow
The best damn psychedelic surf band in town is also one of the best live bands you’ll ever see. Fresh off the release of their latest EP Crash The Party (available on Vinyl/Cassette via MWA) they’re better than ever. Think Sleater-Kinney meets the B-52’s and you’ll start to get the picture.
Speed Babes
Paper thin, crunchy guitar tones meet fuzzed out bass riffs and a steady backbeat. Add on some reverb’d out vocals sang through an old harmonica mic and you’ve got the perfect garage punk sound that is Speed Babes.
Bev Rage and the Drinks
Snack-infused queer punk with one helluva wig collection. Bev Rage and the Drinks are not to be missed, fast punk tunes about Waffle House, Grindr, and Limp Wrists among other topics. Don’t worry about eating beforehand, Bev almost always bring snacks to go with the Drinks.
Montrose Man
This supergroup built out of members of Bleach Party, Velocicopter, and Lasers and Fast and Shit came around a couple years ago and remains one of our favorites. Fronted by the legendary voice and heavy guitar riffs of Meg MacDuff, the band delivers high energy 3-piece rock every chance they get. Their debut album Lazy Looker came out via MWA back in 2017 and has recently been self-released on 12″ vinyl by the band.
Pledge Drive
Melodic garage rock with plenty of synth hooks and even a little bit of vegan-ism thrown in for good measure. Take a look back at their latest music video which premiered via MWA last March and listen to their 2017 release Genuinity for a full taste of what you’re in for this Sunday.
Beastii
Fronted by Jen Dot (current member of Das Dotz and formerly of Swimsuit Addition) Beastii is yet another powerhouse of ’60s-tinged garage rock with some damn catchy melodies. Get there early and catch them rip it up on Sunday afternoon.
Salty (KCMO)
We’ve been digging the synth heavy power pop Kansas City’s Salty ever since we premiered a track from their album Dry Rub back in March. This is good chance to catch them in the big city before they head back home for some of that famous KCMO BBQ.
Post Child
Chicago’s Post Child have remained one of our favorite local acts since the early days of MWA. Their latest single “Simulation” premiered on the site back in January and it’s still a certifiable groove that’s perfect for these breezy summer nights. Don’t miss their set at Brek-Fest!
In only it’s second year, Brek-Fest is shaping up to be a damn good start to the summer that we hope to enjoy for years to come! Check out the full lineup below and get your tickets today!
