There’s plenty to be happy about this Thursday at The Volcano Room, the quaint upstairs venue above the Bottom Lounge. Three of HoZac Records best and brightest acts are coming together to celebrate two new releases from the label and most importantly to beer aficionados, the Chicago launch of Wisconsin’s premier craft beer company, Ale Asylum.
The folks at HoZac have prepared some fine live music that should pair well with these new craft brews. Michigan’s People’s Temple will be on hand to celebrate the release of their third LP on HoZac, Musical Garden.
The ’60s psych influences run deep in these guys. If this new album proves to be even half as good as their last two, fans of vintage garage/psych will want to take home a copy. I’m already deeply hooked on “Handsome Nick”, the first single from the album, and I can’t wait to hear the rest.
Joining them on the bill are one of Chicago’s most impressive psych rock acts around. Radar Eyes will be selling their newly pressed HoZac 7″ Positive Feedback on limited Gold vinyl tomorrow night. The song has been a staple of the bands live show for some time now but finally fans can give it a spin on their home turntables.
“Positive Feedback” has quickly become one of my favorites from the band. It’s a great departure from the reverb drenched vocals and brooding post-punk sound of some of the tracks from their self-titled HoZac debut. Singer/Guitarist Anthony Cozzi’s vocals come to forefront this time and don’t even sound like a Radar Eyes song at first. Then again, the band is so diverse that it’s difficult to even define what makes a “Radar Eyes song”.
Hear it for yourself below and pick up the new 7″ on Thursday.
It’s hard to be into the Chicago psych scene and not know who Outer Minds are. The band has been playing around the city for years and have a healthy collection of LP’s and singles available from HoZac and other labels.
They’re the only band on the lineup not celebrating a new release but a HoZac party wouldn’t be complete without them and their garage rock melodies. Check out “Gimmie A Reason” and you’ll surely see what I mean.
HoZac DJ’s will be around to spin records in between sets. So, do as the show poster says and “Don’t be a BUMMER”. The ticket will only set you back $7, leaving you plenty of cash to spend on craft beer and new records. What’s not to love? We’ll see you there.
Bottom Lounge (1375 W. Lake St ) Doors open at 8pm, show at 9pm, 21+
