Chicago’s Marina City plays pop/rock with a bite. The sextet has played an intimidating amount of shows across the country since the release of their 2012 EP, In the Wake of Dreaming. On April 22, the group released their latest effort, Chimera, and with it came the album’s lead single, “The Lost Boys”.
The track would be right at home among the glory days of Fueled By Ramen. Punchy guitars, keys and drum work create the base for the entire song, giving it a frantic energy strengthened by Ryan Argast’s commanding vocals. While Argast’s range and energy may be comparable to Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump, the track’s background vocal work is more reminiscent of Blink 182’s Tom DeLonge right down to the lyrics – “I’m not growing up”.
The song breaks it’s pace only briefly to bring in a bridge that could rival the theatrics of Panic! at the Disco’s debut. Overall, “The Lost Boys” is a fun and catchy-as-hell track that is sure to be playing over in your head long after its 2 minutes and 29 seconds are over.
Marina City will be celebrating the CD release of Chimera at the Beat Kitchen (2100 W Belmont Ave) tomorrow, 5/8. The 17+ show kicks off at 8:00 PM with support from Sleep On It, Hometown Heroes and Savior Self. Tickets are just $8 online in advance of the show or $10 at the door.
