Chicago’s Minor Moon have a new album, An Opening, on the horizon. From it comes “Sacrificial Animal,” a lush, folky song with its fair share of emotive instrumentation and dramatic pauses.
Led by a jangly guitar melody, “Sacrificial Animal” takes no time at all to kick it into high gear. Jaunty keys, an upbeat drum beat, and lap steel guitar swiftly join frontman Sam Cantor. The chorus flirts with a more ambient feel before chugging back into the folky rock of the verses, but I want more! Lucky for me, a slow build soon leads into a beautifully orchestrated outro that fuses both parts of the song together. The folkiness of the verses combine with the ambiance of the chorus, forming a swirling storm of near-psychedelic instrumentation.
“Sacrificial Animal” juxtaposes playfulness with seriousness, just as it juxtaposes images of a ritual animal sacrifice and an unkempt apartment. Give it a spin below:
While Minor Moon began as a series of bedroom demos written and recorded by Cantor in 2011, we sure are happy that the project has expanded since then to its current lineup. Midwest Action is excited to announce that we’ll be releasing the band’s full-length album on February 8th. Stay tuned, and in the meantime, pre-order here.
