Chicago quintet Blacker Face, fronted by gospel-singer-turned-firebrand-punk vocalist, Jolene Whatevr, have an album out soon and a song to share.
Blacker Face cut their teeth in the DIY punk scene of Chicago and earned a reputation for their first-class musicality and high-energy performances. Their unique fusion of provocative lyricism and transgressive musical arrangement has been labeled Afropunk, Afrofuturist, and experimental.
Today, Midwest Action is proud to premiere “Parade,” off of Blacker Face’s upcoming album. The genre-bending outfit starts the song with a chill Kim Gordon vocal vibe before shifting gears into an anthemic chorus with horns, dissonant guitars, and Whatevr’s soaring vocals. The band is as politically-charged as ever at a time where we need it most.
