Give It a Spin: “Northern States” by The Edwards – Song Premiere

Instant connection can be so rare these days, especially in the musical realm. With a sea of new faces and new tunes to navigate, I remind myself not ignore these sudden moments of as they are so few and far between.

Hence – you should not ignore The Edwards.

Formed out of the ashes of Kyle Maurisak’s 2014 solo project, The Edwards have taken his initial ideas and transformed them with a lush, full band sound. Their new single, “Northern States,” is full of steady yet jangly guitar paired with punchy and properly placed percussion.

Vocally, Maurisak oozes a lo-fi moodiness, as well as some low key seduction. The lyrical content is also something to note as it almost feels like he was penning an anthem for the current times, an escapist idea rooted in love-like feelings, a longing for an environment you can’t reach, a dream you can’t touch.

You love the climb in the step of your run
I’d love less carbon inside of my lungs
You fall into me with all of your weight
And fill my ears with talks of northern states
We’ll see them pacing, ‘cause everybody knows what’s on
We’ll be replacing cement for all that green-blue lush
Calm and hush
Away from that old crushing sense of time

The Edwards have already carved themselves a sizable wedge with their Chicago indie dream sound. If you like acts like Pool Holograph and Post Animal, then The Edwards will fit perfectly into your library.

Snag the single via Bandcamp and check them out at Sleeping Village on 11/27 with Casual Hex, Sun Cop, and Pooky.
