Following posts about St. Louis’ Sleepy Kitty, and local K. Serra, you may think that a write-up of singer-songwriter Bonzie is the indication of a current captivation with local female talent. While that hasn’t necessarily been my intention, with ladies as talented as these, you wouldn’t be entirely wrong.
Bonzie is the musical moniker of 17 year old singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Nina Ferraro. If you’re wary of young talent (and let’s face it, you have every right to be), all you’ll need to do is listen to Ferraro’s latest track “Felix”. With a little help from Los Angeles duo, The Milk Carton Kids, “Felix” plays out more like a song from a veteran folk singer than a track from the debut effort of a young musician.
Reminiscent of Laura Marling’s first solo effort, Ferraro creates something warm and inviting while simultaneously dark. Performing since age 12, Ferraro will soon be celebrating her first official release as Bonzie on Thursday, 8/15.
The album, entitled Rift Into The Secret of Things will be released independently tomorrow, two days before her record release show at Schubas. Do yourself a favor on get on board at the ground level, because Bonzie won’t be there for long.
The all ages show starts this Thursday, 8/15, at Schubas Tavern – 3159 N Southport. Things will get started around 7:30 PM with a set by Tortoise’s Dan Bitney. Tickets are running just $7 and can be picked up at the door or online in advance of the show.
