While Lollapalooza takes over Grant Park this weekend with huge crowds, expensive beers, and bloated line-ups, the Tonic Room will be doing things a bit differently. Enter: Fuckapalooza. In its third year, the three-night fest offers an alternative to the madness of Lolla with an eclectic line-up of local and national acts in a significantly more intimate setting.
And headlining night two of this musical middle finger is the incredible St. Louis duo, Sleepy Kitty.
Made up of Evan Sult, former drummer for Harvey Danger and Chicago’s Bound Stems, and guitarist/vocalist Paige Brubeck, Sleepy Kitty put out their first official EP in 2009 and has since opened for musicians including the Dresden Dolls, Chuck Berry, and Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s.
Signed to Euclid Records, Sleepy Kitty released their ’90s-fueled, garage rock LP, Infinity City, in 2011. For all the audible proof you’ll need, check out the track, “Speaking Politely”, below. Sleepy Kitty followed the LP with a 7″ last August, and has a new album set for release on August 27.
Alongside Sleepy Kitty: makers of kick-ass music, lives Sleepy Kitty: makers of kick-ass posters. Brubeck and Sult started designing posters for their various musical endeavors in Chicago six years ago. Since then, the duo has grown into a full fledged print shop, taking residence in a previously abandoned St. Louis brewery, and even earning the “Best Poster Designer” title from St. Louis’ Riverfront Times.
