MWA Approved: Lily & Madeleine and Cloudbirds at Schubas – 10/18

Musically, my sister and I have nothing going for us. It might be for this reason, among a multitude of others, that I’ve fallen in love with the music of Indianapolis sisters Lily & Madeleine.

Luckily for Chicagoans, we are catching the duo fresh off of their Berlin and Paris performances. Lily & Madeleine are making our city their second stop upon their return to the states.

The two sisters, aged 16 and 18, create gorgeous, forlorn-sounding folk together. After their music video caught fire on YouTube, their popularity spiked as well; an appropriate precursor to their forthcoming full-length release. With mature voices and delicate instrumentation, the folk-pop sisters demonstrate an excellence in composition. Lily & Madeleine’s wonderfully crafted lyrics prove they are more than just talented vocalists, but talented songwriters as well.

It’s not as if age is a measure of skill or technical ability, but to those questioning their musicianship – Lily & Madeleine will absolutely impress. They’ve already gotten attention from Vogue and NPR’s All Songs Considered, and now just need some Chicago love.

Warming up the audience for Lily and Madeleine are Chicago folk outfit, Cloudbirds. With harmonies reminiscent of The Allman Brothers, you’ll notice the trio’s vocals shine alongside their largely acoustic melodies. Cloudbirds are currently working on their second collection of songs in the hopes of a Fall 2013 release.

The spirit and energy of Cloudbirds’ music is comparable to that of Lily and Madeleine, which should make for a fine, folk-filled Friday evening. To purchase tickets or for details from the venue, click here.
