MWA Premiere: “Mess Of Things” by Hemmingbirds

A little over a week ago, we had the pleasure of talking with Chicago indie-rock trio Hemmingbirds about the Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of their newest effort, Half A Second. Well, the campaign was a success and in celebration we are thrilled to premiere the upcoming EP’s first single, “Mess Of Things”.

The track opens with huge sounds split equally between the pounding drum line, commanding clean guitar, and fuzzy tones of the lead hook. Before long, singer Yoo Soo Kim enters and brings with him the signature catchiness and quality of songwriting that we’ve come to expect from Hemmingbirds. Yoo Soo had this to say about the conception of the track:

I came up with this song by copy pasting the drums from “My Love, Our Time Is Now” into a recording session. I was super into Lorde at the time, and tried to go for this loud, clean guitar. The lead guitar originally was me plugging straight into the computer and putting a fuzz plugin on it. I loved how it sounded, but everyone else hated how shitty the tone was.

If you dig “Mess Of Things” as much as we do, make sure to check out Hemmingbirds on Facebook for updates on the release of Half A Second.
