Give It A Spin: “Dark” by Honey & the 45s

When it comes to blues/rock, Chicago is King. Among the acts that make up this impressive scene is the quickly rising Honey & the 45s. This Chicago-based blues rock band has been making waves since 2012 and is fronted by Kristina Cottone and Kim Kozel. The band, originally started as an acoustic set, quickly grew into a soulful rock ‘n’ roll band with the addition of lead guitarist Jon Gould, bassist Sean Tatum, and drummer Jarad Kleinstein.

Honey & the 45s have just dropped their newest album, MAD. The new album is a beautiful representation of what blues rock is all about, and the track “Dark” only exemplifies it further. With melodic chords, chiming, strong female vocals, and a nice bluesy beat, this is a great track for cruising along with the wind in your hair and sun on your face. Although, since it’s currently freezing out, you might want to save that till later.

As well as dropping their new album, in 2014 the band took home the award for Best Blues/Jazz band at the Chicago Independent Music Awards (very justly deserved). They’ve also had the opportunity to open for Cold War Kids at the Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon in Chicago, as well as other notable acts like Big Data.

Opportunities to see this band in an intimate and relaxed setting are dwindling. They have played stages like the Metro and major festivals, so believe me when I say now is the time to get a show in. And wouldn’t you know it, we found a great one for you Chicagoans. Honey & the 45s will perform at the Tonic Room on February 7th alongside Brooke & The Nice Things and On Your Marx. Tickets are available here and will only cost you $5.00.
