Brite Winter Festival Artist Preview: Golden Streets of Paradise

Brite Winter Festival is an annual outdoor 1-day festival held in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood. Brite Winter 2015 will be held on February 21, 2015 and boasts over 60 musicians and bands from around Cleveland and other regions who will be playing on nine stages throughout Ohio City and the W. 25th Street area. Over the next five days, Midwest Action will be presenting an artist/band a day who we think you should definitely check out, should you want to brave the elements and rock out to this truly unique music festival.

Formed in 2013, Golden Streets of Paradise is a small, two-man operation that emits the sound of a hundred instruments. With Myk Porter on guitar and vocals, and Adam Boose on drums and programming, Golden Streets of Paradise harmoniously mixes electronic music with hard rock ‘n roll to create a loud and vibrant arrangement that pleases the ear, and strengthens the soul. Having released their EP, The Sun is Everything, in 2014, Golden Streets of Paradise will be bringing their A-game to Brite Winter to warm the frozen streets of Cleveland.

You can catch Golden Streets of Paradise live on February 21, 2015 at Townhall from 6:35 p.m. – 7:10 p.m.

1. Describe your music in 5 words.

Adam: Dense, Dirge-y, Dirty, Dismal, Funky.
Myk: Loud, Driving, Earnest, Hooky, did I say Loud?

2. What are some of the challenges of being a two-piece band.

Adam: We have the same amount of gear that 4 people would normally use, but only two people to carry it into the club!
Myk: One of the biggest challenges is that I have to put up with that other guy.

3. You use electronic pads to control the bass and synth on your drum kit while you play. Can you elaborate on what you do, and how this adds to the complexity of your music?

Adam: That’s just a little trick. I have electronic triggers on my acoustic drum kit which control an old Simmons SDS-V drum brain. A friend bought it from a flea market for $0.35! It’s the same model that Duran Duran and Flock of Seagulls used. Mixed with the acoustic drums, it adds a little depth and muscle to the sound… makes the kick drum deeper, the snare has more of a hiss to it, and of course, sometimes it goes “beow beow!”

4. Before Golden Streets of Paradise, there was Brandston. How did the music evolve from one project to the other, and what are you trying to achieve with GSP?

Myk: I’m not entirely sure about the evolution. I guess from my point of view… that was then, and this is now. It’s just making music at a different time in life with different dynamics. In the case of Golden Streets, the music is the product of the two of us writing as a duo with the intent of performing it that way and incorporating both of our tastes and influences. As far as what we want to achieve, I think we want to put something genuine, honest, and sincere out there and see what happens. If we create music that’s true to ourselves and that we’re proud of, then I think the sky’s the limit.

5. What can Cleveland expect and look forward to from you at Brite Winter?

Myk: Two guys from Cleveland who are genuinely excited to be part of the Fest this year, playing their hearts out in the freezing cold. It’s gonna be super fun!
