Cleveland-based artist, Derek Hess, has been creating professionally since the mid-90’s. He’s designed posters for bands such as Pantera, Pink Floyd and Pearl Jam. He’s no stranger to album art and both magazine and television features. His art is even displayed permanently in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Louvre. What the artist is currently pursuing, however, are his fine art images.
Hess’s pieces are, in a word, impressive. I love the looseness of his ink drawings and their sketch-like quality. The artist flirts between areas of hyper-detail with dense linework and lighter areas utilizing implied lines. He is experienced with the human form, accurately and artistically rendering it in many of his pieces. They’re a little dark, a lot unexpected, and completely and totally his.
“My advice for anyone who wants to get involved with drawing based art: learn the fundamentals of drawing. This way you don’t have to worry about how to draw something, your energy can be spent on what to draw. Content with confidence of your ability to execute it.”
